Septic Systems
If your home is in a city, household wastewater likely goes into a municipal sanitary sewer system to a sewage treatment plant. However, if you live in a rural area or a small community, your wastewater may be treated by a septic system (also referred to as an on-site wastewater system). Or, especially in cottage country, you may have a holding tank, which is pumped out once it's full.
When properly constructed and maintained, on-site treatment systems are the most environmentally responsible and friendly ways to treat household sewage waste. Naturally occurring bacteria completely treat the waste and the groundwater is returned to the ground.
