Step 1: Estimating and Ordering

Estimating is easy with Mountainstone. The same block is used for the base, the wall block, and the capstone block. The recommended maximum wall height for a Mountainstone wall is 84cm (33"), above ground.

Step 2: Excavation and Base Preparation
Excavate a trench for the base course to a depth of 10cm to 15cm (4" to 6") below finished grade or to firm soil. The trench width should be a minimum of 30cm (12"). Spread 8cm to 15cm (3" to 6") of crushed gravel in the trench, leveling and compacting it to provide a firm base for the wall.
Step 3: Base Course and Wall Construction

Start placing the base course at the lowest grade point. Check alignment and leveling of base course and adjust if necessary. Base course will end up being barely visible once construction is complete, as a portion of the block will be buried. Continue with additional courses, backfilling behind the wall with granular fill as you go. Fill after every second course. On every second course, you should use half blocks on the ends to help stagger the joints in the wall.

Blocks are designed to construct curves without cutting.
Step 4: Wall Design
Mountainstone works great for constructing sweeping curves, circles and straight walls. The universal block eliminates the need for separate corner units but limits your ability to make a 90° corner. In order to build a straight wall, you will be required to leave gaps at the back of the wall between blocks. The weight of the block allows you to do this without worrying about compromising the structural integrity of the wall.
